Myths about textbooks debunked
As an occasional student myself and the father of some college (and college-bound) students, I feel the pain of textbook prices.
We hear a lot about why college textbooks are so expensive and what might be done to slow or even reverse the expense of college textbooks. In a recent post, I suggested that professors start comparing the prices of the textbooks available for their courses when making adoption decisions. See The Cost of Textbooks, in which I pointed out that some A&P textbooks cost as much as $45 less than comparable A&P textbooks.
Even state legislators have taken this up as a cause and have enacted regulations aimed and making textbooks more affordable. Unfortunately, none of these efforts seem to work . . . or at least not very well. Some of these efforts actually make the situation worse!
Most of the news stories Ive seen or heard—and comments from students and politicians—makes it clear that we are not getting all perspectives on the issues involved. How do I know that? Because as a life-long student, as a professor, and as a textbook author, I know some important facts that are not commonly reported or debated. Facts that could and should expand the debate to help us find solutions that actually work.
So that you can find out "the rest of the story" I suggest checking out this brief article from the Text and Academic Authors Association (TAA), of which Im a member:

This is one of those books that introduces an entirely new and fascinating topic. A similar work would be Chaos: Making a New Science which introduced the concepts of chaotic dynamical systems at a time when even many practitioners of the sciences would not have heard of it.
Similarly, this book introduces the discoveries in epigenetics (epi- meaning "on", or a layer on top of classical genetics) and pretty much all of this will be new information unless you have been actively working in the field of cell biology over the past few years.
The book talks about the paradigm shift that is occurring as cell biologists are realizing that this epigenetic information is as complex and important to the correct function of life as the underlying DNA genome, and even allows for Lamarckian inheritance in certain cases where an offsprings own epigenetic information and phenotype can be influenced by that of the parents, meaning that some environmental effects in a parents life can directly influence future generations.
Also much of the non-protein-coding genome that for many years was considered to be unimportant "junk" is now turning out to be very important as it can be transcribed into functional RNA molecules that perform important functions. The book contains a simple graphic showing that the ratio of the non-protein-coding DNA to that of traditional protein coding genes increases in direct proportion with the complexity of the organism. The fundamental genes and proteins between say a chimpanzee and a human are virtually identical and it now begins to look as though its that "junk" DNA that makes all the difference.

Speech and Voice Science [Paperback]
Author: Alison Behrman - ISBN: 1597564818 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB
DESCRIPTION
After providing an introduction to the science of speech and voice production and creating a foundation of knowledge in basic concepts of acoustics and physics, the author gives extensive attention to the examination of imaging, kinematic, and acoustic instrumentation used in research and clinical settings. The author includes a generous number of spectrograms (vowels, consonants, and coarticulatory effects). Two key chapters on phonation present the most in-depth exploration of voice and laryngeal dynamics available in any existing text. The author fully integrates concepts of speech motor control and speech perception into relevant chapters on vowels and consonants. Historical and current theories of speech production and perception, and many of the issues central to research in these areas, are addressed thoroughly. Discussions of clinical and research instrumentation are integrated into each chapter, helping the reader understand how information presented in each chapter is obtained, and how the abilities and limitations of instrumentation shape our knowledge of speech and voice science.
Instructors and students benefit greatly from the substantial number of critical review questions following each chapter, and the accompanying PowerPoint slides facilitate teaching and learning.
The second edition has been revised and updated to be a better resource for students and instructors alike. In addition to a comprehensive updating of research and references, the second edition contains changes to help engage students in the learning process. The most significant enhancements include:
*A reorganization of the introductory chapters
*The inclusion of ample student study material
*Classroom group activities
Each chapter now contains section study questions in addition to the end-of-chapter review questions, which have themselves been expanded. The section study questions are designed to help focus students on the key concepts and to assess their learning.
The second edition also includes website recommendations and Instructor-Facilitated Classroom Learning Activities at the end of each chapter. New material has been added as well, including a chapter on Advice for Students on Effective Study Techniques.
Bringing together all of the knowledge crucial to the study of speech and voice science in one concise and readable textbook, this book is essential for courses in speech and voice science and acoustics and will effectively supplement courses in voice disorders. The depth of knowledge presented here is also highly appropriate for doctoral students and professionals in the field.

My professor required a CD + access code for her class, so I bought the book from Amazon and it did NOT come with a CD + access code. Evidently, the manufacturers website has the SAME copy like you see HERE; whats more, you ALSO have to buy the access code separately from them, which requires more $$$; thus, youre better of purchasing the book at your local school textbook store. My school textbook store has the book include with CD + access include for only $10.00 more from Amazons $114.00 price.By Yeng Xiong
Amazon shouldve add in the title, "does not include CD"!
This product does not come with an iprofile code which is half the price of the book, but with no price drop and no sign that it does not come with one. If you are going to need the Wiley code you are better off getting this book from the school campus.By Chris Sarradet

Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America [Unabridged] [Audible Audio Edition]
Author: - ISBN: B003N44KLA - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB
DESCRIPTION
In this astonishing and startling book, award-winning science and history writer Robert Whitaker investigates a medical mystery: Why has the number of disabled mentally ill in the United States tripled over the past two decades? Every day, 1,100 adults and children are added to the government disability rolls because they have become newly disabled by mental illness, with this epidemic spreading most rapidly among our nations children. What is going on?
Anatomy of an Epidemic challenges listeners to think through that question themselves. First, Whitaker investigates what is known today about the biological causes of mental disorders. Do psychiatric medications fix chemical imbalances in the brain, or do they, in fact, create them? Researchers spent decades studying that question, and by the late 1980s, they had their answer. Listeners will be startled - and dismayed - to discover what was reported in the scientific journals.
Then comes the scientific query at the heart of this book: During the past 50 years, when investigators looked at how psychiatric drugs affected long-term outcomes, what did they find? Did they discover that the drugs help people stay well? Function better? Enjoy good physical health? Or did they find that these medications, for some paradoxical reason, increase the likelihood that people will become chronically ill, less able to function well, more prone to physical illness?
This is the first book to look at the merits of psychiatric medications through the prism of long-term results. By the end of this review of the outcomes literature, listeners are certain to have a haunting question of their own: Why have the results from these long-term studies - all of which point to the same startling conclusion - been kept from the public?

Robert Whitakers Anatomy of an Epidemic reveals the damage that can and very often does result from long-term use of psychotropic drugs, and, along with it, the alarming rise in chronic mental illness in this country since such drugs as Thorazine were introduced in the 1950s. Because this drug could cause tardive dyskinesia and other permanent nervous system damage, the pharmaceutical industry got to work on new generations of drugs that are being used now.
The rise in drug use corresponds with psychiatry staking a renewed claim to therapeutic expertise and market share, which had begun to erode due to competition from counselors, social workers and others (see the Selling of DSM by Kirk and Kutchins -- [...]-- and Making Us Crazy by the same authors). The prescription pad, and the power of academic psychiatry in collaboration with Big Pharma, allowed psychiatry to open up a very large market, one that today seems to encompass the entire population.
Whitaker documents the alarming rise of disability and increasing number of people on SSI and SSDI due to mental illness over the last 50 years, including the increase since the 1980s, when serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as Prozac were introduced, and again, with the introduction of what are called atypical antipsychotics (e.g., Risperdal, Zyprexa), and reliance on drugs in the benzodiazepine family (Valium). But perhaps the most tragic of all cases with drugs used to treat what were once considered within the range of "normal" behavior (e.g., shyness) is the prescribing of amphetamine-like agents such as Ritalin or Adderall for so-called attention deficit disorder (ADHD) in children, and, even worse, powerful psychotropic drug cocktails to treat a newly introduced category of illness, childhood-onset bipolar disorder.

"Before the Dawn" is a very well written survey of what genetics can teach us about the origin and evolution of the human species. Starting with the common ancestor of humans and chimpanzees 5 million years ago, Wade explores the latest theories about the development of the "hominid" line and explains why homo sapiens evolved differently from our cousins, the chimpanzees and the bonobos.
Most of the books about human origins tend to focus on paleoanthropology and related disciplines. "Before the Dawn" does a great job of synthesizing the discoveries of paleoanthropolgists with the findings of geneticists--in some cases, examination of human DNA has confirmed what paleoanthropolgists have long believed, in others it has raised new and sometimes disturbing questions.
Without becoming overly technical, Wade explains how scientists use the study of DNA to determine when signficant events occurred in human evolution--for example, when humans began to use fully modern language (about 50,000 years ago), the size of the ancestral population of modern humans (as small as 150 people), or when the ancestral population left the African continent (also around 50,000 years ago).
Some of Wades observations may surprise and trouble many people. Creationists will not be pleased with the books basic view that Darwins theory of natural selection is absolutely correct and that it applies to people as well as animals.

Human Anatomy Organs 10 Interesting Facts!
HUMAN ANATOMY:
There are many types of organs with completely different purposes. The human anatomy of organs is quite remarkable, when looked at more closely. Want to learn more about the human organs? Then read on.
Human Anatomy - Organs - 10 Interesting Facts!
Heres a list of 10 facts regarding human organ anatomy:
- The definition of an organ is "a collection of tissue than together shares a common function".
- There are 78 different organs in the human body.
- Humans have 11 major organ systems. These are the muscular, endocrine, digestive, circulatory, lymphatic, integumentary, nervous, reproductive, respiratory, skeletal and excretory systems.
- Organs can be found in all higher biological organisms, also in plants.
- Some organ system work together or overlap. An example is the muscular and skeletal system. This is often referred to as the musculoskeletal system.
- There are six vital organs in the human body. Without these we will die. The vital organs are the brain, the heart, the liver the kidneys, the lungs and the pancreas.
- The largest human organ is the skin, obviously in surface but also in weight. The liver is our second largest organ.
- The smallest human organ is the pineal gland and is located close to the center of the brain.
- The least important organ in our body has for a long time thought to be the appendix, since the purpose of it has not been discovered. Recent studies however indicate that it produces and protects good bacteria, which help us digest food.
- The smallest bone is the human body is the stirrup which is located in the ear, while the largest is the femur, which is the thigh bone.

When I was a nurse practitioner student, one of my preceptors turned me on to this handy pocket manual. What a great tool! I have just ordered my second one, as my first one is getting ratty from being in my coat pocket and from over use! A great bargain and jam packed with handy tips and charts. Just the right size for the pocket. I have recommended this to other students over and over again.By K. Stuart
Info contained in the Pocket Pal is good but the print is so small and fuzzy its hard to read.By Donna Lynch

While I bought it about a year ago, I only just finished reading most of it.
Its very well written. Its concise without missing anything.
Frankly, theres nothing that I can think to add or remove to this regarding the standard of care for pediatric dentistry.
Surprisingly, theres also a pretty well written section on pediatric practice management. Theres also the best written material on the reconstruction of cleft lip and palate in any text that Ive read.
This is the perfect book for dentists interested in understanding the standard of care, the protocols of treating kids, and the scientific rationale behind it.
The only possible complaint is that this isnt equivalent to a pediatric residency (however, no book would be).
Highly recommended.

CHEMICAL BOND HYDROGEN BOND
THE POLAR COVALENT BOND BETWEEN HYDROGEN ATOMS AND OTHER ATOMS.
forms when a hydrogen atom with a partial positive charge attracts the partial negative charge of neighbouring electronegative atoms.
most often larger oxygen or nitrogen atoms.
Thus HYDROGEN bonds result from attraction of oppositely charged parts of molecules.
Are weak compared to Ionic or Covalent bond
They cannot bind atoms into molecules
Even though single Hydrogen bonds are weak, very large molecules may contain thousands of these bonds.
Acting collectively,
these bonds provide considerable strength and
help determine the three dimensional shape of large molecules.
eg.
In H2O- water
Hydrogen bonds occur because hydrogen atoms in 1 molecule are attracted to the partial negative charge of the oxygen atom in another water molecule.

SURFACE TENSION
A measure of the difficulty of stretching or breaking the surface of a liquid.
COHESION
The tendency of like particles to stay together.
The hydrogen bond that link neighbouring water molecules give water considerable COHESION
The cohesion of water molecules creates a very high SURFACE TENSION
The boundary between water and air, waters surface tension is very high
because the water molecules are attracted to one another than they are attracted to the molecules in the air.
eg.
In breathing
A thin film of watery fluid coats the air sacs of the lungs.
So each inhalation must have enough force to overcome the opposing effect of surface tension
- as the air sacs stretch and enlarges when taking in air.

This is the book for ultrasound physics. Easy enough to read and helps to understand the subject. Only thing that would make it better is if it had online access to make it possible to read the book from a computer.By Manpreet Singh
Its amazing! I can not believe how much new information made it to this textbook. Everything seems perfectly written! This is the best physics textbook I have ever studied from. Dr. Edelmans fourth edition is the best ever! I would recommend this textbook to anyone!By Yeah Yeah
